After scoring 771 agency websites on 36 criteria, we asked a simple question: what separates the best tenth from everyone else? The answer is not what most agencies spend their time on.
One caution before the numbers: we defined “top 10%” by total score, which includes these same criteria, so the gaps below show where the leaders pull ahead, not proof that each item causes the lead.
Where the leaders pull ahead
- A concrete AI story: +5.8 points on a 20-point scale. Leaders show real AI and data work with examples, not “AI-powered” slogans.
- Structured data: +5.8. Leaders mark up their organization, services, articles and FAQs so search engines and answer engines can read them.
- Published pricing and engagement models: +5.3. Even a range, or a statement of how engagements work, beats silence.
- Technical depth: +5.0. Named stacks, architecture write-ups and engineering writing that a CTO would respect.
- A homepage with an arc: +4.9. Hook, problem, proof, process, action, in that order.
- A visible process: +4.8, and a security and compliance answer: +4.8.
- Clear positioning: +4.6. In five seconds you know what they build, for whom, and why them.
Where nobody pulls ahead
Speed (+1.9), SEO (+1.4), language support (+1.2) and accessibility (+1.1) barely separate the leaders from the field. Most agency sites are equally middling there, so polishing them earns little relative advantage.
The best agency sites are not faster or prettier. They are more specific.
Two more patterns
- Clutch rank barely predicts website quality. The correlation between a firm’s position in the Clutch 1000 and its web design score was -0.14, which is weak. A high review rank does not mean a good website.
- Closer competitors are better. Agencies in our “direct competitor” group had a median web design score of 229 out of 440, against 203 for adjacent firms. The peer group sets a higher bar than the average.
What we are doing with it
Our own site was strong on the criteria that do not separate leaders and weak on the ones that do. We have since added an industries page, a how-a-custom-build-runs section, contract terms on the security page, and a “find your fit” tool, and we are collecting client proof. We plan to re-run the benchmark and share the change.
