The state of agency websites in October 2026: speed, accessibility and AI readiness

We measured 726 agency sites with Lighthouse, axe and a crawler. Median mobile performance is 56, nearly nine in ten have a serious accessibility finding, and almost nobody publishes in two languages.

Agencies sell the web for a living, so you would expect their own sites to be in good shape. We measured them. This is what the numbers say, with the caveats that come with measuring from one place at one moment.

The sample is 726 sites from the Clutch 1000 that answered and were not blocked, measured on 20 October 2026. Lighthouse produced a valid mobile result for 697 of them. Lighthouse numbers come from one simulated mobile run per site, so treat single sites loosely and the distribution seriously.

Speed

  • Median mobile performance score: 56 out of 100.
  • Only 9% of sites scored 90 or higher.
  • Median largest contentful paint: 7.2 seconds under Lighthouse’s throttled mobile profile. Google treats 2.5 seconds as good.

Accessibility

  • Median Lighthouse accessibility score: 92.
  • 88% of sites had at least one serious or critical finding in an automated axe scan on desktop. Automated scans catch only part of the problems, so the real share is higher.

Search and AI readiness

  • 82% publish some structured data, but only 16% mark up an FAQ.
  • 13% publish hreflang for more than one language.
  • 5% block AI training crawlers in robots.txt, and fewer than 1% block AI search crawlers.

The field is slow on phones, inaccessible to some visitors, and monolingual. All three are fixable without a redesign.

What to fix first

We did not diagnose causes, so this is a reading of the numbers, not a finding. A 7-second median paint on mobile usually points at large images and heavy scripts, and the quickest checks are image sizes and third-party tags. For accessibility, the common automated failures are color contrast, missing labels and missing alternative text, all fixable in an afternoon on most sites. For language, a second language published properly, with hreflang, is a rare advantage.
